When your child starts showing signs of a cold, cough, or congestion, it’s comforting to have natural tools at hand that support healing without side effects. Homeopathy offers gentle, effective remedies that can ease respiratory symptoms and support the body’s natural defences—especially in little ones.

There are certain rules which I talk about a lot when it comes to respiratory health, and the main one is that we must re-establish nasal breathing! It is a prerequisite of good health in general, and of the respiratory system specifically. The air, which goes through the nose is warm, moist and filtered, and that is the type of air our lungs like. You can read about the importance of nasal breathing in my books “Four Journeys” and “Your Breathing Coach”.

But what if your little one got unwell and developed that awful persistent cough? While it is a good idea to go and see a health practitioner, you can start helping and supporting your child with the use of homeopathy.

Here are five essential homeopathic remedies every parent should consider keeping in the medicine cabinet:

1. Aconite – Best used at the very first sign of a cold, especially after exposure to cold wind or a sudden weather change. Think of it for sudden fevers, dry coughs, and restlessness that come on fast.

2. Bryonia – Ideal for dry, painful coughs that worsen with movement. The child may want to lie still and be left alone. The lips may be dry, and there’s often a thirst for cold drinks.

3. Spongia tosta – Great for dry, barking coughs that sound like a seal’s bark. These often worsen at night, and the child may wake up coughing or gasping.

4. Antimonium tartaricum – For rattling, wet coughs with lots of mucus that’s hard to bring up. The child may be pale, tired, and want to be held. Breathing may sound noisy or congested.

5. Hepar sulphuris – For very sensitive children who become irritable and chilly when unwell. Coughs may be harsh or barking, often worse from cold air or touch.

These remedies work best when matched carefully to your child’s individual symptoms. If you’re unsure which one to use—or if symptoms persist—consult a qualified homeopath.

With the right support, your child’s body can heal naturally, and you can breathe a little easier too.
