Hi I’m Julia Rudakova, Naturopath, Functional Breathing Educator & Speaker.

I grew up in a small Russian town, 40km south-east of Moscow.  My mom was quite sick and I happened to spend much of my childhood in clinic waiting rooms. By 7 years of age I knew how to spell complex names of medicines, like acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).

I started suffering from bronchitis and other respiratory issues in my teens. I was treated using mainstream medicine coupled with some natural remedies. This helped alleviate the symptoms a little, but gave me no long-lasting healing.

This continued all throughout my 20’s until I had my first son. Through this time I studied linguistics and intercultural communication, became a teacher, and soon after moved into private tutoring. I found this career very fulfilling, as I realised I had a gift and love of teaching & coaching in a face-to-face setting.

The birth of my first son was really what motivated me to address my respiratory conditions in a holistic way. When my son was 3 he got very sick with a fever and cough. I brought him to emergency but it was inundated and home visits weren’t available. The only available doctor was a naturopath, so despite my skepticism, we tried the natural remedies prescribed. To my surprise they worked! That’s when I realised there was more to natural remedies than I had initially thought, and I needed to be a better example for my son.

Slowly I weaned myself off of mainstream medication and replaced it with herbal and homeopathic remedies. When my son would get sick, I would also treat him naturally and the whole household moved from medication to natural remedies – it was a big shift in lifestyle.

Two years later I fell pregnant with my 2nd child, and had my first big miscarriage. A year later I had another one. It was incredibly heartbreaking. The day when I carried a tiny white coffin from the car to the grave, the sky was grey and it was raining, as if mother nature was crying with me – I will never forget. I asked the doctors and nurses if I could have some additional testing done and the response was “We have to wait until you have 3 or more. Then we can send you to a clinic”. I was appalled.. I thought “ do we need to wait for another big miscarriage?”. It made me feel like just another number in the system, struggling to be heard.

Emotionally and mentally I was at my lowest point. But in searching for answers, this also led me to a big “Spiritual Awakening”. In all my searching, I realised that we have a mental and emotional body in addition to the physical, and they all intersect and affect each other. We are not just physical beings. We need to look after our emotional existence as it has a direct impact on our physical health.

I decided to enroll in a naturopathic school. A few weeks later I found out I was once again pregnant.

This time, I used my newfound knowledge to keep myself healthy on every level. I kept track of my hormones and used herbal medicine to regulate my hormones during this time. I also meditated, and focused on self-care and connecting with myself on a deeper level. I actually made myself a priority.

I gave birth to my 2nd son in September, 2010.

All was well, until 2013 when I had to rush him to the emergency room. He had become asthmatic and was struggling to breathe. They monitored him overnight and gave him 2 types of medication, which he didn’t respond well to at all. Regardless, he got discharged anyway and was sent home.

When we got home, I called a homeopath, and within 12 hours his symptoms had eased. However it wasn’t a perfect long-term solution.

I started my search for modalities and natural therapies that would support asthmatics and people with respiratory issues. I knew of a modality called Buteyko Breathing which was very popular in Russia, which I began teaching my son with great results.

At one point when he had an asthma attack – he did the Buteyko Breathing exercises and within 10 minutes he had colour in his face. He could get up and walk, which previously hadn’t been thought possible. That’s when I knew Buteyko Breathing was a modality I needed to integrate within my naturopathic practices.

In 2018 I became qualified as a Buteyko Educator, and combined it with my existing naturopathic practices to form the Oxygen Revolution Functional Breathing program.

Now, my mission is to empower and educate individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions –  with practical tools and proven holistic methods to take charge of their health.
